If you’re a jazz and Latin music fan and happen to be in Puerto Rico, mark your calendars for the 2024 Puerto Rico Jazz Jam. This two-day event will be held on January 26th and 27th at the Sala René Marqués of the Centro de Bellas Artes in Santurce. The event will showcase some of the best musicians and vocalists on the island, organized by Humberto Ramírez, a renowned trumpet player, composer, arranger, and musical director. The Puerto Rico Jazz Jam will showcase Humberto Ramírez and his Big Band, who will perform some of La Lupe’s most famous songs, like “Qué Te Pedí,” “Puro Teatro,” and “La Tirana.” The Big Band will also perform alongside the special guest Michelle Brava, a renowned Puerto Rican singer and actress who will bring her style and charisma to La Lupe’s songs. Michelle Brava has enjoyed a long and successful music, theater, and television career. She has recorded albums in various genres, including pop, rock, salsa, and merengue. She has also starred in musical productions such as “Rent,” “Evita,” and “In the Heights.”
The Jazz Jam event will also showcase numerous renowned artists. These include Sounds of Percussion, a group of skilled percussionists who will present the rhythms and sounds of bomba and plena. Furito Ríos and Standard Bomba Quintet, a band that seamlessly blends jazz and bomba with original compositions and arrangements. Lastly, Henry Cole on Drums will lead a quartet of virtuosos to explore the possibilities of jazz improvisation.
This year’s Puerto Rico Jazz Jam will pay tribute to the memory and legacy of La Lupe, the Cuban singer famously known as “The Queen of Latin Soul.” La Lupe was a flamboyant and controversial performer who enraptured audiences with her powerful voice, expressive gestures, and emotional delivery. She sang a variety of styles, including bolero, son, guaracha, rumba, and soul. She collaborated with artists such as Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaría.
