Puerto Rican singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist PACHY GARCÍA, under the name PACHYMAN crafts old-school dub and dancehall and roots in the traditions of trailblazers like Scientist and Lee “Scratch’ Perry.
In 2019 and 2020, Pachyman issued a pair of independent records before signing with ATO Records, which released The Return of Pachymanthe following year.
García grew up in Puerto Rico, where his early musical tastes revolved around hardcore punk. As his tastes evolved, he became fascinated with the sounds of dub and roots reggae and innovators like Scientist, Augustus Pablo, and King Tubby.
In early 2010 García relocated to Los Angeles and became heavily involved in the city’s Dub Club scene. While serving as drummer and singer for L.A. synth-punk band Prettiest Eyes, he built an arsenal of vintage instruments and equipment and composed songs and dub experiments that reflected his eclectic tastes, playing all the instruments himself.
His first collection as Pachyman, In dub, appeared in 2019 via indie imprint Permanent Records. This was followed by a second album that ventured further into roots reggae territory on the small vinyl label Mock Records a year later. With his audience growing, ATO Records offered García a contract and released his third Pachyman album, The Return of Pachyman, in 2021.
Pachyman celebrates the release of his new album, Switched On, on September 26, 2023 at the Sultan Room in Brooklyn.
