The inaugural Purchase College Latin Jazz Festival will occur on Saturday, February 10th, at The Performing Arts Center in Purchase College (The Purchase PAC). The festival will feature two events: The Purchase College Jazz Festival starting at 3:30 pm and A Tribute to Eddie Palmieri at 8 pm.
The daytime Purchase College Latin Jazz Festival will be a showcase and competition featuring five regional high school Latin Jazz bands. The participants are Jazz House Kids Latin Jazz Ensemble (Montclair, NJ), Celia Cruz High School (Bronx, NY), Susan Wagner High School (Staten Island, NY), All-City Jazz Orchestra (Manhattan, NY), and All-City Latin Orchestra (Manhattan, NY).
Each band will be able to perform a 30-minute set for the public. After their first performance, they will perform again for a panel of judges. The judges are professional Latin jazz musicians Eddie Palmieri, David DeJesus, Ray Vega, and Ricardo Rodriguez. The judges will provide feedback on the performances, and the most outstanding students from each group will be invited to participate in the evening performance.
The festival is open to the public, and $25 general admission tickets are available on The Purchase PAC’s website at Click Here.
The event will be divided into two halves. The first half will begin at 6 pm, and the second half will start at 8 pm. The latter half will be dedicated to a musical tribute to Eddie Palmieri, an NEA Jazz Master and ten-time Grammy Award winner. Eddie Palmieri, also known as “El Maestro,” is a renowned pianist, bandleader, arranger, and composer of salsa and Latin jazz. His unique style combines the Afro-Caribbean rhythms of his Puerto Rican roots with the complexity of his jazz influences, including Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, and his older brother, Charlie Palmieri. The line-up for the tribute to Eddie Palmieri includes Ray Vega on trumpet, David DeJesus on saxophone, Ricardo Rodriguez on bass, and the Purchase Latin Jazz Orchestra, which is an ensemble comprising talented students from the Purchase College Conservatory of Music. Although Palmieri no longer performs live, he will be present at the event and is expected to address the audience during the evening concert.
