RIP Bassist Extraordinaire Charlie Haden (1937-2014)

featuring bassist Charlie Haden, pianist Gonzalo Rubalacaba and drummer Paul Motian

I’m paying tribute to the late, great bassist Charlie Haden today by listening to his recordings and appreciating his artistry. One of my all-time favorites is The Montreal Tapes, recorded live at The Montreal Jazz Festival in 1989, featuring Charlie on bass, pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and drummer Paul Motian. From the outset it’s obvious that Charlie brought out the best in his players, as evidenced by the fact that Gonzalo and Paul play beyond themselves. Listen to the trio’s interpretation of Solar and La Pasionaria and judge for yourself. Suffice it to say it was a historical encounter, the likes of which we will never see again. Thankfully the event was recorded for posterity. Ironically Charlie confided to the audience that he was “in heaven.” Now he is.
