NEW YORK’S EAST HARLEM RELEASES SINGLE UNDER PANDEMIC
The Island music of “Plena” brought news from town to town heralding major political, environmental, and economic shifts in the turn of the last century. The mobile music played on hand drums informed, protested, and brought solace to the poor of Puerto Rico.
Latinos and African Americans collide at the forefront of this 21st Century COVID19 pandemic with those on the front lines fighting for our lives while many remain rebellious and doubtful. Music soothes the grief of fallen friends. Music quells anxieties over canceled gigs and closed venues as we struggle through this crossroads of impermanence.
Digging through the music of my parent’s past to resist the constant sadness of bad news, the empty streets, and fearful eyes darting from masks, this “plena” emerged like a lotus flower floating above a murky marsh. Produced with cell phones, musical director Antoine Alvear put the music together after receiving my track. He reached out to his brother and friends in Chile for the horns and it was mastered and finalized in the home studio of David Heredero. A Nuyorican tribute of grit and team effort released April 15, 2020, the visuals reflect our present, the words remind us to keep distance, while the beat captures our gratitude to those holding up the fort of our hopes for the future.

Nueva York como epicentro de esta epidemia y el corazón de los Latinos ha sido el mas afectado por esta crisis. Como Latinos, estamos al frente en los hospitales, las bodegas y haciendo los mandados. Pero en el otro lado, han muchos que dudan el peligro, rebeldes contra restringir los caminos. Pero como la música tiene la magia de alegrar el espíritu, mover el cuerpo y hacer resistencia contra la tristeza, esta PlenaCorona fue escrita en el genero Boricua de plena como noticiero. Plena, como voz del pueblo y de protesta y advertencia, forma el centro musical de la PleanaCorona que nos advierte de tomar esta cuarentena en serio – como lo esta haciendo el gobernador Cuomo, y quedarnos en casa, lavar las manos, ponerse las mascaras y guantes detrás de la Diáspora del virus que infecto al mundo entero.
Rompiendo el Aislamiento: La PlenaCorona surgió como flor de Lotus en fango. El destacado pianista y arreglista Chileno Antoine Alvear produjo la canción contando con la ayuda de su hermano y otros músicos actualmente en Chile que pusieron los metales, se los enviaron electrónicamente a Antoine quien se lo envió a nuestro amigo David Heredero que lo finalizo en su estudio de casa en Chelsea.
